US sanctions eight Chinese companies for their role in repressing Uyghurs

The Treasury Department of U.S announced sanctions against eight technology companies chinese for the role they play in the repression against the Uyghur population – mainly Muslim – and other ethnic and religious minorities by the Chinese government.

The US Treasury’s Office for the Control of Foreign Assets reported in a statement that these eight companies “actively” supported biometric surveillance and monitoring of Uighurs in the Xinjiang autonomous region.

As a result of the sanctions, no US citizen will be able to buy or sell shares in these companies, which closes their access to US financing.

Among the sanctioned firms is the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial drones, SZ DJI Technology, for supplying flying robots to the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau that were used to monitor Uyghurs.

“Today’s action demonstrates how private companies in the defense and technology sector are actively cooperating with the Chinese government’s efforts to crack down on members of ethnic or religious minority groups,” said the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Intelligence. Also this Thursday, the Office of Industry and Security of the United States Department of Commerce included 31 Chinese institutions and companies, including the Academy of Military Medical Sciences and 11 of its research centers, to its black list of entities with those that prohibit the export of US technology.

In a statement, it indicated that it adds these organizations to the so-called black list to “respond to threats to the national security of the United States posed by the efforts of the People’s Republic of China to develop biotechnology for military purposes and for human rights abuses.” .
