Blockade in Las Bambas: Government evaluates evicting protesters

This Thursday, the president of the Council of Ministers, Mirtha Vasquez, announced that the Government is evaluating the eviction of the protesters who have blocked access to the MMG Las Bambas copper mine in Chumbivilcas (Cusco) for more than 20 days, pending contractual improvements.

“We are concerned about the situation of the workers within the mining company because there is a right to protect (…) There are several options to evaluate. We cannot allow certain rights to be violated, we will have to proceed to evaluate an eviction with the Interior Ministry, ”Vásquez Chuquilin told the foreign press.

Likewise, the premier recognized that the last option handled by Pedro Castillo’s administration is to decree a state of emergency in said area, which would be approved by the Council of Ministers.

Vásquez recalled that in previous governments the first response was to “prosecute the protest” and criminalize the protesters in clashes with the forces of order.

In that sense, he noted that they seek “a conflict management policy that does not make mistakes in other opportunities (because) this is a government that wants to listen to the demands of the population.”

On the other hand, this media learned that the residents of Chumbivilcas who abide by the blockade also seek to briefly lift their protest measure so that the mining workers can return to their homes for Christmas holidays.
