The former governor of New Jersey Chris Christie announced this Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign to be the Republican Party candidate for the November presidential elections, although he promised to fight for “not facilitate” the arrival of trump again to the US Presidency
“It is clear that there is no path for me to win the nomination. “This is why I am suspending my campaign for president of the United States.”Christie said during a meeting with voters in Windham, New Hampshire.
The announcement by the former governor of New Jersey comes a few hours before the fifth Republican debate begins ahead of that party’s primaries, which start next Monday in Iowa.
Christie did not meet the requirements for the debate called by CNN and which was rated by the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, the former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley and former president Donald Trump (2017-2021), who will not attend.
The withdrawal of the Republican, who also participated in the 2016 presidential primaries, marks the departure of the voice most critical of Trump in the context of the Republican primaries.
In his speech today, Christie again attacked Trump and said that the former president “is not fit” to occupy the White House again.
He stressed that despite his withdrawal from the presidential race he will not stop fighting to defend democracy in the country. “But I promise you this. “I’m going to make sure that in no way do I make it easier for Donald Trump to be president of the United States again, and this is more important than my own personal ambition.”he asserted.
He warned that his goal “It was never just about being a voice against hate, division, and selfishness.” that have transformed the Republican Party under Trump. “My goal has been to win the nomination and defeat Joe Biden”, he claimed.
Last August, Christie pointed out on X (formerly Twitter) that Trump is a “certified loser, verified coward” when he was absent from the first debate of the Republican primaries held in Milwaukee (Wisconsin).
A few minutes after Christie announced her retirement, Haley reacted in X by praising her former opponent. “for a very disputed campaign.”
“Voters have a clear choice in this election: the chaos and drama of the past or a new generation of conservative leadership. “I will fight to win every vote, so that together we can build a strong and proud America,” Haley stated in that message.
Christie’s departure would help Haley and DeSantis increase their chances of getting closer to Trump, who has a big lead on them nationwide. According to the average of polls prepared by the FiveThirtyEight website, he is the favorite in the polls (61.3%)far ahead of DeSantis (12.5%) and Haley (11.5%).
