the british bank Barclays reported on Tuesday that it cut 5,000 jobs from its workforce worldwide last year, equivalent to 6% of its workforce, as part of a cost-reduction program.
“Barclays eliminated around 5,000 positions from its workforce worldwide in 2023, within the framework of its program aimed at simplifying and remodeling the activity, improving service and achieving greater profits“, a spokesperson told AFP, confirming press reports.
This job cuts are a combination of layoffs and unfilled vacancies, after the British bank decided to freeze hiring in the middle of last year, according to Sky News.
The layoffs will allow the group, which in 2022 employed some 84,000 people in 41 countries, “hire (…) in key activities”says Barclays.
The elimination of positions is greater than expected.
The British press speculated last November with cuts of up to 2,000 jobs, as part of a campaign to save 1 billion pounds (US$ 1,272 million).
Barclays had announced in September its intention to eliminate some 450 jobs throughout the United Kingdomciting greater recourse by its clients to its dematerialized services.
