The German shipping company Hapag Lloyd made the decision this Tuesday to continue avoiding passage through the Red Sea for another week due to the risk of container shipping ships being attacked by Yemen’s Shiite Houthi rebels.
For the moment, the Hamburg-based company’s fleet will continue to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, spokesperson Nils Haupt told EFE.
“It still seems to us that the situation is not safe enough to cross the Red Sea“said Haupt, who added that the decision will be reviewed again in a week, on January 15.
Last week the Danish shipping company Maersk, one of the largest in the world, announced the suspension of navigation through the Red Sea for an indefinite period due to the attack suffered by one of its vessels.
“The situation is constantly evolving, remains highly volatile and all available information confirms that the security risk remains at a high level. That is why we have decided that all cargo ships that were going to pass through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden will be diverted around the Cape of Good Hope in the immediate future.”the company reported.
Despite the formation of a US-led alliance to end the attacks, the Houthi rebels have expressed their determination to continue attacking ships they attribute links to Israel as a measure of pressure for the war in Gaza.
