Conservative José Antonio Kast and leftist Gabriel Boric appear tied in voting preferences for Sunday’s presidential ballot in Chile, according to a poll seen by Reuters on Thursday.
Kast, who obtained the partial majority in the first round of November 21, has 48.5% of the preferences compared to Boric, which appears with 48.4%, according to a survey carried out by the Atlas Intel consultancy on a sample of 2,218 cases .
Considering the valid votes, the result is 50% for each candidate. Just over 15 million people inside and outside Chile are eligible to vote in Sunday’s elections. In the first round, Kast obtained 27.9% of the votes and Boric 25.8%.
The first polls after that day showed several points of advantage for the deputy and former leftist student leader, but this has been shortened in recent days.
In the previous Atlas survey at the beginning of December with 2,692 cases, on the other hand, Kast had 38.7% of the preferences compared to Boric, with 41%. On valid votes, it was 48.5% for Kast and 51.5% for Boric.
Chilean electoral law prohibits the publication of electoral polls in the two weeks prior to the elections.
