Cuba receives the first group of irregular migrants returned from the US in 2024

Cuba received this Tuesday the first return of migrants irregularities of 2024, with the delivery of 56 nationals by the authorities of USA that had reached the territory of that country, official media reported.

The majority of the members of the new group are Cubans residing in the province of Matanzas (west) who had participated in three illegal departures from the country.

These were intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard, which returned them to the island that day, according to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) in X (formerly Twitter).

In the last week of 2023, the US Government deported 40 islanders, 31 of them by air and another 9 through the coast guard, according to the agreements in force between both nations in order to stop irregular migration.

Havana and Washington have a bilateral agreement so that all migrants who arrive by sea to the territory of the North American country are returned to the island.

During the last fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2022 and ended on September 30, 2023, nearly 7,000 Cubans were intercepted by the US Coast Guard.

Added to this was the resumption of deportation flights agreed upon by both countries a year ago, mainly for people considered “inadmissible”.

Between 2022 and 2023, a record number of 425,000 Cuban migrants arrived at the southern border of the United States, of which 200,287 arrived during the last fiscal year, according to a report from the Customs and Border Patrol Agency of that country.

Last year Cuba received a total of 5,253 nationals back, mostly from the United States, but also from other countries Mexico, Bahamas, Belize, Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic.

In recent years, Cuba is experiencing an unprecedented migratory wave that has broken records due to the serious economic crisis it is suffering with a great shortage of basic products (food, medicine and fuel), galloping inflation, frequent power outages and partial dollarization. of the economy.

Estimates for 2022 indicate that a 4% of the Cuban population left the country and it is not ruled out that the figures for the recently concluded year could be similar according to those accumulated to date.
