The Iranian authorities have rejected this Monday the accusations made the day before by the United Stateswhich has claimed that Tehran had carried out an attack over the weekend using a drone against a cargo ship sailing through the Indian Ocean.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has stressed that these US accusations “They have no value and are presented for political purposes“.”Washington is not in a position to accuse us,” Iranian diplomats have said, reports Al Jazeera.

“We deal responsibly with maritime security (…) Iran has always been an essential part of ensure the security of territorial waters and maritime navigation,” they added from the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The US accusation

The US Department of Defense on Sunday blamed Iran for being behind of the attack against the aforementioned cargo ship, without confirming any damage among the personnel on board, mostly crew members Indian nationality.

The cargo ship, flagged Liberian but operated by a Japanese firm, suffered the impact when it was about 200 miles from India. The Pentagon assures that the drone was “shot from Iran“, in which it would be the seventh similar incident since 2021.

Since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea have also increased, perpetrated by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, allies of Iran. On Saturday, a senior official in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard threatened the United States and its allies with blocking other shipping routes, although Tehran has denied fueling attacks by Yemeni rebels.
