He Emir of Kuwait, Nauaf al Ahmed al Sabá, has died at the age of 86, according to the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA. Al Sabá was hospitalized in November due to an unspecified but urgent health problem.
The emir, 86 years old, took office in September 2020 after the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabá al Ahmed al Jaber al Sabá, who had led the country since 2006 and had previously headed the Defense and Interior portfolios.
Since his oath of office, the emir has maintained a low profile in Kuwaiti politicsmarked by paralysis due to the resignation of several cabinets due to continued friction with Parliament, currently dominated by the opposition.
This standoff has hampered the rich Gulf oil producer’s efforts to reduce its huge dependence on crude and push through fiscal reforms, including a debt law that allows Kuwait to access international markets, and an additional provision for citizens to buy debt to the Government.
