Mattel has announced that it planned to make a live-action film based on its “American Girl” line of dolls with Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment, following the box office success of its film “Barbie” at the beginning of the year.
The toymaker’s stock rose slightly after it also announced that Lindsey Anderson Beer, screenwriter of the Netflix movie “Sierra Burgess is a Loser,” would write the script and produce the film.
“Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and released in July, posted the biggest box office of the year, and Mattel said in October that it was expected to contribute more than $125 million to the key gross sales of its doll segment in 2023.
“American Girl” was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland, a teacher-turned-entrepreneur who set out to celebrate girls’ childhoods with beautiful dolls and adventure books that fueled children’s imaginations and provided education and entertainment.
Paramount Pictures, a unit of media and entertainment company Paramount Global, has produced several film franchises, including “Mission: Impossible,” while Temple Hill Entertainment has produced films such as “The Fault in Our Stars.”
