The White House reported this Wednesday that the vice president of USA., Kamala Harris, will travel to Dubai for the summit of United Nations about climate change, COP28an announcement that came after the criticism that the American president received for being absent, Joe Biden.
The White House announced in a statement that Harris will be in Dubai on December 1 and 2 to participate in COP28 and advance “the United States’ climate goals and contribute to achieving a strong outcome” during the summit.
Additionally, in another statement, the White House reported a phone call this Wednesday between Biden and his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In that call, Biden informed Mohamed bin Zayed, known as MBZ, that Harris will lead the US delegation and will be in charge of highlighting “global leadership” of the US on climate issues, while helping to drive “greater global ambition” at this event.
The US delegation also includes the special envoy for climate change, John Kerry, the White House detailed.
Biden, who has made the fight against climate change one of the cornerstones of his national and international policy, participated in the two previous summits organized by the United Nations, COP27 in Egypt and COP26 in the United Kingdom.
The White House has not given any explanation as to why Biden will not attend on this occasion and some environmental advocacy groups have criticized that decision, considering that an opportunity is being missed to put the climate crisis at the top of the international agenda. The COP28 summit starts this Thursday in Dubai and will end on December 12.
