The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has already arrived in Israel together with the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander de Croo. This is his first stop on his trip to the Middle East – he also plans to visit Palestine and Egypt – in the hope of being able to help resolve the open conflict between Israel and Hamas, and that is causing real massacres on the Civilian population since last October 7.

Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Sánchez held a meeting with the president of Israel, Isaac Herzog. There, the leader of the Executive has assured that Spain shares Israel’s pain and condemns the attacks by Hamas. Likewise, he hopes “that the hostages” held by Hamas will be allowed to return. Along these lines, he has stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself, but he has also pointed out that the country “must comply with international law.”

In this sense, the leader of the Executive has been blunt: “Israel’s response must not involve the death of civilians in Gaza. We ask that all civilians be protected and humanitarian aid immediately enter Gaza. There is a risk that people will die immediately.” To resolve the conflict, Sánchez has demanded that the Palestinian National Authority “take charge of Gaza” and has put on the table the proposal with which he is also trying to convince his European partners. .

“We must propose the two-state solution, “It is the best way to defeat terrorism and guarantee security in Israel.”, he highlighted. In response, the Israeli president has stated that he is concerned about the humanitarian situation of the population in Gaza. Therefore, he hopes that the truce (which has not yet come into force) will help “improve” the humanitarian situation.

Shortly before, Sánchez and De Croo held a meeting with the director of the Civil Commission for crimes committed by Hamas against women and children in the October 7 attack, Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy. Once his visit to Israel ends, the President of the Spanish Government plans to travel this Friday to Cairo, where he will also meet, early in the morning, with the Belgian leader, a meeting with the president of the Arab Republic of EgyptAbdelfatah El-Sisi, at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace, in Heliopolis.

Shortly after, both leaders will make a joint appearance before the media and, at the end of this, they will hold another meeting with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. At noon, Sánchez plans to visit the Rafah Pass, where a large part of the Palestinian civilian population is being evacuated fleeing the Israeli bombings.
