Three doses of the vaccine COVID-19 are “optimal care,” but two doses of the immunizations Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna or a Johnson & Johnson vaccine remain the official government standard for being fully vaccinated, America’s leading infectious disease expert said Sunday, Anthony Fauci.
Health authorities will continue to evaluate which scheme should constitute the official designation, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, said on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” program.
“Well, I certainly believe, George, that it is optimal care,” Fauci said in response to the question of whether three doses of vaccine might be the new standard of care.
“I mean, for the official requirements, it is still two injections of the mRNA (Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna) and one injection of the J&J for the determination of what is required or not. But I think that if you look at the data, it is increasingly clear that if you want to be optimally protected you have to put on a reinforcement ”, he added.
It will take months to find out if the annual booster doses of the vaccine are necessary, Fauci said, adding that, from an immunological point of view, he hopes that a booster dose is enough to provide protection greater than the six months that offers the initial vaccine.
