Pedro Sánchez was re-elected as president of the Spanish Government

The socialist Pedro Sánchez was re-elected this Thursday as president of the Spanish government by Congress, after obtaining the support for his investiture of a majority of 179 of the 350 deputies, announced the president of the Chamber, Francina Armengol.

“I declare that the confidence of Congress has been granted to Mr. Pedro Sanchez”, Armengol said.

The support of the seven deputies of the Catalan secessionist Carles Puigdemontthanks to a controversial agreement to amnesty the independentists, was key for Sánchez, at the head of the government since 2018 after then winning a motion of censure, to remain in office for four more years.

Before the vote, the socialist leader claimed the full legitimacy of his investiture and urged the conservative Popular Party (PP), the main opposition party, winner of the July elections, to accept its defeat.

Sánchez was re-elected within the framework of a country divided by his decision to grant an amnesty law to Catalan independentists in exchange for their support.

Sánchez will form a new Government in Spain in the coming days with their allies from the far-left Sumar coalition, thus culminating almost four months of blockade since the legislative elections of July 23.
