The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, travels this Wednesday to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) with the goal of talking about migration with the American, Joe Biden, and between frictions with the Peruvian Government of Dina Boluarte and with China for trade and fentanyl.
López Obrador’s attendance will also stand out for being only his seventh trip abroad after almost five years in office and for being the first time he has participated in a multilateral forum of such magnitude, with more than 20 leaders meeting this Thursday and Friday in San Francisco. (USA).
The Mexican president has generated expectations because he will meet, for the first time, with the president of ChinaXi Jinping, with whom he will have “an open agenda” and they will try “the topics they consider”, as he expressed in his morning conference this Wednesday.
China, trade and fentanyl
The president of Mexico warned in December 2021 that “If there is no strengthening of the economy of North America and America, China will have economic, commercial, dominance of the world.“, something that he considered not to be “convenient”.
While last May he stated “have proof” of illegal trafficking of fentanyl from Chinawhich is why he urged their cooperation to combat trafficking of this drug and its chemical precursors from Asia in the face of pressure from the United States.
“The relationship (with China) is good, we have a good relationship with all governments, and I am going to inform you, and you will see that we are going to bring good news.”, he said shortly before traveling.
Biden, migration
On the other hand, one of its main objectives will be to meet with Biden on Friday, when he will present the proposal reached after the migration summit that Mexico hosted on October 22 with Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Panama and Venezuela, which concluded with a rejection of the “coercive measures” and the request for more legal alternatives for migration.
“Now that I am going to the United States, I am going to discuss the issue with President Biden. I want to continue insisting that an aid plan be approved for the people of Latin America and the Caribbean”, he announced this Monday.
In addition to meeting Bidenwith whom he will also talk about drug trafficking and trade, López Obrador will chat after the inauguration of APEC with the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, the other partner of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).
And, also on Thursday, he will have a meeting with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, whose businessmen have shown interest in Mexico in light of the phenomenon of chain relocation or ‘nearshoring’.
On the contrary, the Mexican president warned that he will avoid approaching the president of Peru, with whom he will avoid appearing in photographs because he considers her “spurious” after the dismissal of the now former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022).
“I hope I don’t have to take the photo, I don’t want it, I tell you this with all my love, with my good faith, I don’t want to take a photo with the president of Peru”, he expressed last Thursday.
