China disapproves US proposal on APEC trade and investment policies

China is opposed to members of the United States-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum incorporating sustainability and inclusion into their trade and investment policies, a source briefed on the negotiations said on Wednesday.

Negotiations on this issue are continuing at the APEC summit in San Francisco in an attempt to craft a speech that will be approved by the group’s 21 member states, the source said.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai told a plenary meeting focused on trade that she hoped the proposal, called by the Joe Biden administration “San Francisco Principles to Integrate Inclusion and Sustainability into Trade and Investment Policy”, could be completed soon.

Tai said the US-led initiative was “supported by all but one economy and, as such, it is unclear whether APEC will fulfill that mandate. However, I remain optimistic that economies will soon finalize the San Francisco Principles”.

There were few details about the U.S. proposal, but the Biden administration is promoting the idea of APEC economies increasing opportunities for more people, particularly disadvantaged populations, and incorporating clean energy and carbon emissions reduction goals into their policies. development, growth and trade.

Tai is separately trying to negotiate a steel production deal under environmental standards with the European Union, which aims to disadvantage Chinese steelmakers because of their higher carbon emissions.

The news of China’s objections to the APEC summit comes as US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met in San Francisco for talks seeking to ease tensions between the superpowers on issues such as conflicts. military, drug trafficking and artificial intelligence.
