Steel giant Tata Steel to cut 800 jobs in Netherlands

The Indian steel giant Tata Steel announced this Monday that it will cut 800 jobs in the Netherlands to maintain “competitiveness and profitability” in the face of the difficulties faced by this market.

The steel market has been in difficulties for some time. To remain competitive and profitable now, and in the future, Tata Steel Netherlands is taking major steps, including cutting 800 jobs” of work in the plant IJmuidennear Amsterdam, the company reported in a statement.

Tata Steel employs 11,500 people in the Netherlands, 9,200 of them at the steelworks in IJmuiden.

The Tata Steel plant at the port of IJmuiden faces growing criticism from local residents and health authorities who accuse the company of contaminating air, soil and water, and causing disease.

In February, the Dutch prosecutor’s office opened a criminal investigation against Tata Steel for accusations of contaminating in a way “intentional and illegal”.

The authorities also identified the company as one of the largest emitters of CO2 in the country.
