The president of USA, Joe Bidenwants to reestablish military ties with ChinaThe US national security adviser said on Sunday. White HouseJake Sullivan, days before the president and his Chinese counterpart meet.
Biden will meet in person with Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time in a year on Wednesday during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. It will be only the second in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in January 2021.
“The president is determined to see the restoration of military-to-military ties because he believes it is in the interest of the national security of the United States”Sullivan said in an interview with “Face the Nation” from CBS. “We need those lines of communication so there are no errors or miscalculations or miscommunications.”
Sullivan said the restoration of military ties could take place at all levels, from senior management to the tactical operational level, as well as “in the water and in the air in the Indo-Pacific.”
He added in the program “State of the Union CNN reported that Biden would try to advance military ties during his meeting with Xi, but declined to provide further details.
“The Chinese have basically cut off those ties of communication. “President Biden would like to restore them”Sullivan said. “It is one of the main points on the agenda”.
The Biden-Xi summit is expected to discuss global issues, from the war between Israel and Hamas to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, North Korea’s ties with Russia, Taiwan, the Indo-Pacific, human rights, manufacturing of fentanyl, artificial intelligence, as well as “fair” trade and economic relations, a senior US official said.
Relations between the two countries cooled after Biden ordered the downing of an alleged Chinese spy balloon flying over the United States in February. But since then, senior Biden administration officials have visited Beijing and met with their counterparts to restore communication and trust.
