The Canadian mining company Argentina Lithium will extend its lithium Rincón Oeste and Antofalla Norte, in northern Argentina, after having entered into agreements to add two mining concessions on neighboring salt flats.
As reported this Wednesday by the company, in a statement, it has signed a property option agreement for Don Fermín, an area of 1,456 hectares. In this way, its Rincón Oeste project will increase its area to 5,198.8 hectares.
On the other hand, it has signed a property option on Lexi-30, which will allow it to add 789 hectares to the Antofalla Norte project, which will have a total area of 16,619.5 hectares.
“These new areas will be incorporated into our exploration programs and we are planning to implement advanced geophysics to confirm the presence of brine aquifers, followed by drilling and pumping tests to evaluate their potential to host lithium in brines”indicated Nikolaos Cacos, executive director of Argentina Lithium.
Don Fermín, in the northern Argentine province of Salta, is located on the eastern flank of the Rincón Salt Flat, about 19 kilometers from the main block of the Rincón Oeste project.
In addition, it is adjacent to the Rincón lithium exploration project developed by the Anglo-Australian company Río Tinto and the Rincón project of the Australian company Argosy Minerals.
For its part, Lexi-30, in the northern Argentine province of Catamarca, is located on the west side of the Salar de Antofalla, adjacent to the Antofalla Norte project of Argentina Lithium and neighboring another lithium project of the American company Albemarle.
Lithium is now one of the most dynamic sectors in Argentina, along with hydrocarbons.
Argentina is the fourth largest producer of lithium in the world (behind Australia, Chile and China), the third in reserves (behind Chile and Australia) and the second in resources (behind Bolivia).
The country currently has a portfolio of 49 lithium projects, of which only three are already in production: Olaroz (from the Australian Allkem), Fénix (from the American Livent) and Caichari Olaroz (from the Chinese Gafeng).
Due to the potential of the projects in advanced construction, Argentina plans to soon climb to third place as the world’s largest lithium producer.
