Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office requests 30 years in prison for former President Añez for “genocide”

The attorney general of BoliviaJuan Lanchipa, requested on Monday 30 years in prison for Jeanine Anez for the crime of “genocide”within the framework of the accusation against the former president and other authorities for the deaths during the post-election protests in the country in 2019.

Lanchipa presented a list of defendants for the more than 30 deaths recorded in clashes during the massive social demonstrations that occurred in the Andean towns of Sacaba and Senkata. In addition to Añez, several of his former collaborators and his former military and police chiefs are accused of crimes,

According to the Prosecutor’s indictment, military personnel “use of their weapons with war ammunition against the civilian population.”

“These events occurred after the joint military police operational planning and execution arranged by the central level of the Government through the commanders of the Bolivian Armed Forces and Police”the attorney general said at a press conference.

After the protests that followed Evo Morales’ departure from power in 2019, the vice president of the Senate, Jeanine Añez, took over as interim president and led the country until Luis Arce won the elections in 2020.

The former president, 56, was already sentenced last year to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of fomenting a coup against the socialist government led by Morales at the end of 2019.

According to Lanchipa, the elements provided by the investigation “they are multiple, convergent and univocal”to establish the criminal responsibility of the people who will be brought to trial.
