The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahuannounced today the formation of an emergency government together with Beny Gantza member of the opposition, former Minister of Defense and former Chief of the Army Staff, to confront the war with the Palestinian militias in Gaza.

“Both agreed to the establishment of an emergency government and a war management cabinet“reported a joint statement signed by both leaders.

In addition to Gantz and Netanyahu, the cabinet includes the current Defense Minister, Yoav Gallantwith a small group of people in charge of decisions linked to the current military operations, initiated after the land, sea and air assault by Hamas militiamen last Saturday, reports the newspaper ‘Haaretz’.

The agreement comes after days of conversations between the prime minister and the leader of the opposition. Netanyahu first invited opposition leaders to form this emergency government after the surprise attack by Hamas.

The statement from Netanyahu and Gantz reads: “The two agreed to the establishment of an emergency government and a war management cabinet. A ‘war management cabinet’ will be created consisting of three members: the prime minister, the defense minister and the president of National Unity.”

There will also be two additional officials who will act as observers in the war management cabinet. “On behalf of the National Unity party, a total of five ministers without portfolio (one of them as an observer): Beny Gantz, Gideon Sa’ar, Gadi Eisenkot and two other ministers”.

Eisenkot and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will act as observers of this cabinet, the statement added. In addition, a place in the war management cabinet will be reserved for Yair Lapid, who along with Gantz are the two strongest members of the opposition to Netanyahu’s coalition in Parliament. Negotiations for Lapid’s inclusion have not yet been concluded and local media explain that this is due to disagreements with Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners.

Finally, the agreement establishes that, while the war lasts, Bills cannot be promoted or government decisions made. that they are not linked to the conflict with the militias.
