The oil giant Chevron reported this Monday that it suspended its operations at a production platform of natural gas close to the coast of Israel at the request of the Israeli government following Hamas’ attack on the country over the weekend.
“Chevron Mediterranean Limited was instructed by the Ministry of Energy of Israel to stop its production on the Tamar platform”said a spokesperson for the company, noting that they continue to supply customers in Israel and the region from another platform, the Leviathan Production Platform.
The measure occurs on the third day of fighting between Hamas and Israel, with 700 dead on the Israeli side and 560 in the Gaza Strip.
In 2021, the Israeli government had asked Chevron to suspend activities on the Tamar platform during armed clashes.
“Our priority is the safety of our staff, the communities in which we operate, the environment and our facilities,” Chevron indicated.
In a separate statement, the Israeli Ministry of Energy said: “Due to the situation” was “ordered the temporary suspension of the supply of natural gas from the Tamar reservoir.”
