The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obradorrectified this Monday that he will attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in November (APECfor its acronym in English) in USA after canceling its attendance last month due to the participation of the Government of Peru.
“I was not going to be in San Francisco, because it is not a personal matter with the president (Dina Boluarte of Peru) that was imposed, but it is a matter of not supporting an injustice with my presence. However, since they insisted and President (Joe) Biden has behaved very well, I accepted, I am going to go“, declared the president.
“Of course, I’m not going to be there all the time, now it’s going to be like: you arrive a day early, you sleep, you participate, you eat and you come back.”, he added.
López Obrador had canceled his trip to the forum due to the attendance of Boluartewhom he considers a president “spurious” after the dismissal last December of the now former president Pedro Castillo.
“I had thought (not to go) because of the attitude of the Government of Peru, because of the injustice they committed with the president of Peru, that they have him imprisoned, it was a coup d’état against Pedro Castillo, the oligarchy of Peru never accepted him because he was indigenous, for being from the mountains, a classist, racist attitude“, the Mexican ruler now reiterated.
After canceling, López Obrador proposed to Biden another meeting to urgently address the new wave of migration in the region, but the White House offered two options: one in Washington in early November or maintain its attendance at the APEC forum.
“I chose San Francisco because it is a meeting that matters a lot to us because of the economic and commercial relationship, it is the meeting of the Pacific and Asia, Asia-Pacific, and we are going to participate”, he reiterated in his morning press conference.
“Yes, I reconsidered, I won’t be there long, but the president invited me Bidenhe invited me to both, I can’t go to both, I can’t not go either, I have to maintain, I do it out of conviction, a very good relationship with the United States Government, it suits us”he added.
The president revealed that the international meeting in Washington will be a follow-up to the Summit of the Americas that the United States organized in June 2022, when López Obrador did not participate because the White House did not invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
“What I think is that we have to seek the unity of everyone and no one has the right to exclude”López Obrador remarked.
