The acting president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has promised his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski, to provide him with more support to defend Ukraine’s “critical” infrastructure, although it has not specified what type of material or help it will allocate for this. This was reported by Government sources to laSexta, confirming that there was a “very cordial meeting” between both leaders in which they discussed the Russian invasion and the position of the European Union to stop the advance of Putin’s Army.

In that meeting, Zelensky asked about Ukraine’s accession process to the EU. An issue that will be addressed this Friday in the European Council, although the same Government sources have recalled that no concrete steps will emerge. “Spain is in favor of enlargement. They have our support, but we are going little by little“, these sources have indicated, who have also reported that the president of Ukraine has spoken about the situation in Europe and Sánchez has spoken to him about the support of Spanish society for this cause.

At the meeting, Zelensky also addressed the importance of European unity, especially in cases of aggression such as that suffered by Ukraine. And there he was reminded that at the next council, in Brussels, the sending of 50,000 million euros will be finalized to collaborate in the Ukrainian defense against the Russian offensive. Precisely, this Thursday the Budget and Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament gave its first approval to this aid package for the period between 2024 and 2027.

With 86 votes in favor, six against and two abstentions, the European Parliament has supported the proposal of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Some funds that depend on the contributions of the Member States. In that meeting between Sánchez and Zelensky, training was also offered to soldiers and demining teams, and a commitment was made to more humanitarian military aid for winter protection “to the extent of the capabilities” of Spain. “If the aggression freezes it will be a critical moment. By 2028, the Kremlin will be able to restore the military potential that we have destroyed and will have enough strength to attack the countries within its desire for expansion in the Baltic states,” said Zelensky, who has demanded that Europe “continue being strong” to remain as “human rights freedom protection center”. This is what he stated: “We must not allow Putin to destabilize any part of the world or our partners, we must continue to pressure with political and economic sanctions so that they cannot continue spreading chaos.”
