US expands investigation into engine failures in Ford vehicles

US authorities have expanded their investigation into engine failures. Ford Motor Co.to cover almost 709,000 vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSAfor its acronym in English) added, in documents published on its website, that it modified the status of the investigation to an engineering analysis, a step closer to a withdrawal from the market.

Investigation now covers pickup trucks F-150and SUV models explorer, Rough, edge, Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator. They are all from the years 2021 and 2022 and have 2.7 or 3 liter turbo V6 engines.

The agency warned that under normal driving conditions, engines can lose power, apparently due to faulty valves.

The agency opened the initial investigation in May of the year after receiving three letters from owners. Initially the investigation covered only the 2.7-liter engines of the trucks Rough.

Since then, ford has reported 861 customer complaints, warranty claims and engine replacements including the other models. No crashes or injuries have been reported.

The company told the agency that valves typically fail when a vehicle is newly manufactured, and that most failures have already occurred. He added that he already changed the design of the valves, in October 2021.

In a statement Monday, Ford said it was cooperating with NHTSA in the investigation.

The agency announced that it will evaluate the frequency of the problem and the effectiveness of manufacturing changes implemented by Ford.
