– I got a call from Cyprus that they had closed my bank. We had a month of arguments that they were going to take 20 percent. to all the people who deposited money there. As a result, this bank was closed with one decision. What we had collected over 10 years basically ceased to exist on one Saturday – said Kamil Kosowski in the program “In the shadow of sport”.

The former Polish representative told how he lost almost all his money in one day. – In 2013, when I last joined Wisła Kraków, I had a bit of a hard time with life. There was a chance to play for Wisła again, so I said: “I’m going.” I played abroad, our future was secured. When I moved to Wisła, I was asked how much I would like to earn and I said: “No matter how much you give…”. I received PLN 2,000 a month, plus some bonuses – said Kamil Kosowski in the program.

The former football player said that after signing with Wisła Kraków, his financial situation became more complicated. – March came. I got a call from Cyprus from a friend that they closed my . We had a month of fights where they supposedly took 20 percent. to all the people who deposited there. What happened was that with one decision, probably made by the European Union, this bank was closed. What we had collected over 10 years basically ceased to exist on one Saturday – explained Kosowski.

He then added that some of the funds were saved by the guarantee fund. – We had a split account, so we got 100,000 each. euro. I didn’t have much time to think about whether to become an agent or play coach, I just had to face life – he summed up.

However, the facts differ from the vision of “one decision” that the EU has made. In Cyprus, which is a tax haven, there was a financial crisis in 2013. The government decided to nationalize from 6.75 percent. up to 9.9 percent deposits placed in local banks to obtain EUR 5.8 billion to save the country from bankruptcy. Due to the crisis, the second largest bank in Cyprus – Cyprus Popular Bank – also collapsed.

Kamil Kosowski started his junior career in KSZO Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, from which he moved to Gwarek Zabrze in 1991. Five years later, he made his senior debut for Górnik Zabrze. However, he spent most of his time with Wisła Kraków, where he joined in 1999, and played 147 matches, scoring 15 goals. Then he went abroad, where he represented, among others, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Southampton, and APOEL FC. In 2011, he returned to Poland, signing a contract with GKS Bełchatów, and ended his career two years later after another stay in Wisła. Kosowski has played 52 times for the Polish national team, and after his football career ended, he started working on television. We could watch it many times on Canal+ Sport, and also on Channel Sportowy. He also writes regular columns for “Przegląd Sportowy”.
