He british government announced on Sunday that it had closed contracts for 4,000 million pounds (US$ 4,870 million) with several companies to finance a new phase of the project of submarines new generation attack system SSN-AUKUS.
These contracts, with groups such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Babcock, are part of the AUKUS military alliance closed with the United States and Australia to counter Chinese ambitions in the Asia-Pacific region.
“These submarines will reinforce the Royal Navy to maintain our strategic advantage in the seas”declared the Minister of Defence, Grant Shapps, when unveiling this new stage of the project at the annual congress of the conservative party currently in power.
The leaders of the three alliance countries unveiled in March the launch of this joint nuclear-powered submarine program (although without this type of weaponry on board).
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said then that it was “the most important multilateral defense agreement in generations.”
In a separate statement, British aircraft manufacturer BAE Systems said the future SSN-AUKUS “will be the largest, most powerful and most advanced submarine” supplied to the Royal Navy.
According to this group, state investment “will cover the work for its development until 2028” and the “recruitment of more than 5,000 people” at its factory in Barrow-in-Furness, in the north of England.
The first examples of this submarine are due to be delivered at the end of the 2030s.
Nuclear-powered submarines are difficult to detect and can travel great distances for long periods, in addition to being equipped with sophisticated cruise missiles.
