The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology goes to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weismann for their research related to messenger RNA vaccines against Covid 19, the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm reported.
The Nobel Prize in Medicine is the first in the round of these prestigious awards, which will be followed by the announcements in successive days of those in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and finally that of Economics, next Monday.
“The discoveries of Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman – winners of the 2023 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine – were instrumental in developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020. Through their innovative findings , this year’s winners have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system. “They have contributed to an unprecedented pace of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times,” the Academy explains.
