The EU warns Elon Musk: “You know he won’t hide.” It’s about what’s happening on X

The European Union warns Elon Musk to comply with new regulations regarding fake news and Russian propaganda – writes “The Guardian”. It turns out that X (formerly Twitter) contains the most posts spreading disinformation.

After Elon Musk bought Twitter and announced “unlimited freedom of speech”, more and more fake news or tweets related to hate speech began to appear on the platform. Now it turns out that in the case of X (as Twitter is now called) the situation is very bad.

X has the worst misinformation rate among social media platforms

According to the European Commission report published on Tuesday, Platform X has the highest percentage of posts containing disinformation or propaganda of all social networking sites on the European Internet – Facebook is in second place.

Unlike X, Meta (Facebook), Google, TikTok and Microsoft have committed to following the code developed by the EU (Twitter abandoned it after Musk’s takeover), which is intended to better align social media platforms with regulations banning disinformation. However, this does not exempt X from compliance with EU law in this respect.

EU officials have now warned Elon Musk that he has no choice but to comply with regulations aimed at curbing disinformation online. “Mr. Musk knows that he will not hide by abandoning the code of practice. There are certain obligations arising from hard law. My message to Twitter/X is therefore: you must adapt. We will watch what you do,” said European Commissioner Vera Jourová, who is responsible for the implementation of the new code, quoted by a British daily.

The EU report on disinformation on the Internet also revealed many actions taken by the largest social media platforms to counteract disinformation, including, of course, Russian propaganda spreading on social networks. For example, Tiktok removed almost 6 million fake accounts, in the case of Linkedin it was 6.7 million accounts, and Google removed ads from 300 propaganda websites and rejected offers from another 140,000. advertisers.

Other large platforms have also taken their actions, but X is still avoiding this obligation. Elon Musk has not yet commented on the case and the EU’s warnings.
