The US affirms that it has consolidated itself as Nicaragua’s main trading partner

The new charge d’affaires of USA in NicaraguaKevin Michael O’Reilly said this Saturday that his country has established itself as Managua’s first trading partner.

“Today the United States is the most important trading partner in the world for Nicaragua,” the US diplomat highlighted in an audio with video that he posted on his social network account X (formerly Twitter).

The US represents a third of the imports Nicaraguans and almost 61% of exports totals, according to data from the US embassy in Managua.

According to data from the US Government, in 2022 Nicaragua sold 5,728 million dollars (5,369 million euros) of its total exports to the United States, a global 60.82%.

That is, Nicaragua’s exports to the United States grew by 23% last year compared to 2021, when they totaled 4,656 million dollars, 60.07% of the total.

Then came the countries of Central America with 1,168 million dollars, Mexico with 926 million dollars, the European Union with 440 million, Taiwan with 126 million, Canada with 93 million, and China with 36 million, according to data from the diplomatic headquarters. .

In his speech, the head of mission of the Washington embassy in Managua said that he assumes his “responsibilities with enthusiasm, a virtue as valuable as it is necessary to strengthen bilateral ties.”

Also to “maintain an honest and always respectful diplomatic relationship between our nations,” he added.

Likewise, he stated that the United States “supports and will support Nicaraguans in their efforts to lead their country towards a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for all its people.”

Washington was left without an ambassador in Nicaragua as of May 19, 2023, the day its representative in Managua, Kevin Sullivan, will leave the country.

The US was one of the countries that rejected the November 2021 electoral process in Nicaragua, in which President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, were re-elected to their positions, with seven of their potential rivals in prison.

The US continues to be Nicaragua’s main trading partner, the main source of family remittances and one of the preferred destinations for Nicaraguan migrants.
