The Peruvian Police have dismantled a criminal network that was dedicated to sell newborn babies at 750 euros. The case has been uncovered following the visit of one of these alleged mothers to the doctor.
The woman went with her baby in her arms to the Manco Capac hospital, in Cusco. She was accompanied by another woman, but keeping their distance. The alleged mother wanted vaccines for her son, who was barely 13 days old, but her strange behavior raised the suspicions of health personnel.
Gloria Venero, a nurse at the center, was one of the first to realize that something was not right. As she has said on the ‘Latina’ network that she told the obstetricians to be careful “because the mother had no controls”that is, the roles of the newborn.
The baby did not stop crying and Dr. Victoria Escalante asked the mother to breastfeed him. Without success, the woman ended up confessing that she was not her baby and that she had it because she was helping a friend.
Then, the Peruvian police showed up at the clinic and arrested the mother. Her companion tried to flee with the child but she was intercepted along with a man who turned out to be her accomplice. The three involved were identified as Fanny Hurtado Altamirano (45 years old), Doris Rosa Huayhua(55 years old) and Ruben Mora Cuyuchi (55 years old).
Analysis of their cell phone chats reveals that they are part of an alleged baby buying and selling network in Cusco. They would have sold 20 newborns, some for 750 euros. The prosecutor Andrónika Sanz has told ‘Televisión Perú’ that “Fetuses and newborn babies were sold, apparently. They were called dolls, dolls. Sleeping Awake”.
The network operated in a clandestine maternity hospital in Cuzco, recruiting vulnerable, very poor pregnant women. There he worked fourth defendant in the baby sales network. She is the daughter of Rosa Huayhua, a nurse specialized in obstetrics, Lizett Blanca Zambrano Huayhua.
If babies were born with problems or ailments, they talked about “putting them to sleep.” Prosecutor Paulo Rivero tells it: “They mean it literally. They could kill them.”
Of the four accused of trafficking, only the false mother, Fanny Hurtado, is in preventive prison. Rosa Huayhua fled after appearing before Peruvian justice.
The EFE agency reports that the Public Ministry of Peru has reinforced investigations by appointing two specialized prosecutors to follow the case reported at the Manco Capac hospital.
