Grupo México: wave of migrants paralyzes 60 freight trains

Mexico Group Transportation suspended the movement of 60 freight trains on routes to the north of the country, due to a “notable increase” of migrants boarding the wagons to advance through Mexican territory, the company said Tuesday.

In Mexico, it is common for migrants who arrive each year from Central America, the Caribbean and South America to clandestinely board freight trains to travel on their route to the United States, which sometimes causes accidents that can cost them amputations and even , life.

The company, also known as Ferromex, detailed in a statement that it took the measure for the “severe risk” for the integrity of migrants who use trains and after registering, in recent days, nearly half a dozen cases of injuries or deaths among these groups.

“The accumulation of migrants in recent days has increased significantly, on the railway and in the railway operations yard”said the firm, belonging to the Grupo México conglomerate.

In addition, he added that the stopped wagons have the capacity of 1,800 cargo trucks and that he has informed his clients of the temporary effects of the measure on production chains and international trade.
