The president of the European Comission, Ursula von der Leyenpresented this Sunday on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa an emergency plan to help Italy manage the record arrival of migrants to its territory.
Von der Leyen visited with the head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, the reception center for migrants on the small Italian island that is saturated by the disembarkation of thousands of people in recent days.
After the tour, the head of the European executive presented a ten-point aid plan aimed at managing the current situation, better distributing asylum seekers among the members of the bloc and preventing the repetition of episodes such as the massive arrival of people, which They put Italy’s logistical and administrative systems under pressure.
The aim of the program is to combine a tough stance against people smugglers and a simplification of legal pathways so that those who qualify for asylum can reach Europe.
The European executive wants to reinforce the help given to Italy by the European Union Asylum Agency (AAUE) and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) to guarantee that migrants are registered, that their fingerprints are taken and that they be interviewed.
Frontex, and other entities, must also improve surveillance of the sea and “analyze options to expand” their missions in the Mediterranean.
