Argentina seeks to increase exports of food, technology and services to Cuba

The president of ArgentinaAlberto Fernández, met this Saturday with his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to look for formulas to increase their exports to the island of food, technology and professional services for the agricultural sector.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the summit of the Group of 77 and China, which will be held between this Friday and Saturday in Havana with the aim of promoting South-South cooperation in the field of science, technology and innovation.

According to a statement from the Argentine Presidency, Fernández assured that it is “a duty” to continue moving towards “alternatives that allow increasing bilateral trade, especially on the part of Argentina in the areas of food, technology and professional services for the agricultural sector.”

Both presidents considered it “important” to advance in the implementation of the Cooperation Framework Agreement for Agricultural Development, which seeks to increase Cuban productive capacity and contribute to rural development and the work of producers on the island.

Fernández thanked Díaz-Canel for Cuban support for Argentina’s claim to the Malvinas, Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their respective maritime spaces.

In May 2022, the Vice Chief of Staff of the Government of Argentina, Jorge Neme, met in Havana with Díaz-Canel to study ways to strengthen bilateral relations, especially in the areas of the agri-food industry and food production.

Neme spoke of opening “a horizon of opportunities for the development of bilateral economic relations” and advanced that Argentina “It will export knowledge and experience in Cuba’s agri-food value chain, transferring technology and exporting agricultural machinery and services.”

”We are going to contribute to the food security of the Cuban people,” he added.

Last January 2022, the foreign ministers of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, and Argentina, Santiago Cafiero, signed a cooperation agreement for agricultural development in Buenos Aires within the framework of the XXII Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).
