Ovidio Guzmán López ‘El Ratón’, son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmánhas been extradited this Friday from the prison where he was in Mexico to the United States, a country that seeks to try him for drug trafficking. fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.
Official sources from the federal government have confirmed to the newspaper ‘Proceso’ that, from approximately 1:00 p.m. (local time), Interpol agents have gone to the Altiplano federal prison to comply with the order to extradite him.
Currently, Ovidio Guzmán is already in the city of Chicagoalthough he also faces charges in New York and Washington DC.
In total, the United States Government has against it 11 criminal charges related with drug trafficking and control of a criminal enterprisesince the authorities identify him as the heir of the Sinaloa Cartelan organization founded by his father.
The Attorney General of the United States, Merrick B. Garlandhas confirmed the extradition and explained in a statement that “this action is the most recent step in the Department of Justice’s effort to attack all aspects of the cartel’s operations.”
“The fight against the cartels has involved incredible courage on the part of U.S. law enforcement and Mexican military and police service members, many of whom have given their lives in the pursuit of justice,” Garland said. and added that “I thank them and the Department’s prosecutors for their work and sacrifice. I also thank our counterparts in the Mexican government for this extradition.”
He concluded by recalling that “the Department of Justice will continue to hold those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated too many communities across the country.
On the other hand, National Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall has noted that Guzmán’s extradition is “testimony to the important ongoing cooperation between the US and Mexican governments in the fight against drug trafficking and other vital challenges.”
In a statement, Sherwood-Randall expressed his gratitude to the Mexican Justice Department for its collaboration, and praised the work of the civil service and the Armed Forces of the United States and Mexico for having made “the maximum sacrifice in the fulfillment of their duty to guarantee that there is accountability and justice for those who break the law“.
Ovidio Guzmán was arrested on January 5 in Culiacán, Sinaloa, being the second time that federal forces detained him. The first was in October 2019, but he was released hours later by order of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obradorto avoid an escalation of violence, as the cartel attempts to rescue him.
In its investigations, the US Government has indicated that Ovidio Guzmán coordinated the shipment of fentanyl, marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine to this country for the Sinaloa Cartel, and that he and his three brothers were involved in his father’s escape from the Altiplano federal prison in 2015.
