IATA calls for the end of the air restrictions dictated by the appearance of the omicron variant

Those restrictions have been discouraged by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other public health bodies, IATA noted.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which encompasses a large part of the world’s airlines, asked governments on Wednesday to lift restrictions on flights “immediately” that were issued urgently two weeks ago in response to the alarm by the omicron variant.

Those restrictions have been discouraged by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other public health bodies, IATA said in a statement.

“After two years of COVID-19 we know a lot about the virus and the uselessness of travel restrictions to control your transmission, but the appearance of the omicron variant produced an instantaneous amnesia ”, the general director of the association, Willie Walsh, lamented in the official note.

The IATA therefore calls for an end to the “chaos” caused by the emergency that in a few hours generated the detection of the omicron variant and “leave behind uncoordinated measures and without evidence or advice that travelers suffer”, Underlined the head of the association.

“It is unacceptable that urgent decisions have created fear and uncertainty in travelers just now that many are going to undertake trips to see their family or enjoy their deserved vacationWalsh said.

Going forward, IATA calls for civil aviation strategies that are adaptable, proportionate, non-discriminatory, and frequently reviewed with the needs of latest pandemic data, which has caused great losses to the airline industry in the last two years. (I)
