On Friday, September 8, Morocco experienced its worst earthquake in more than six decades: An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale devastated the Marrakech region, southern Morocco. In fact, the tremors have been felt in several towns in Andalusia.
This phenomenon has claimed the lives of 2,122 people and more than 2,000 injured, in Morocco, as the latest records indicate; and today, Monday, September 11, two days after the catastrophe, the search for survivors continues, now against the clock. These next 24-48 hours are crucial.
The Ainternational aid (which Morocco has accepted, for the moment, from countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar began to mobilize to help in this tragedy. Today, Monday, France has just announced the delivery of five million euros to support the activities of various non-governmental organizations participating in the earthquake response.
They have mobilized up to there United Firefighters Without Borders (an NGO made up of firefighters, health workers and professionals from different fields specialized in immediate response to major emergencies), who claim to have found a “level of absolute destruction.”
There are places and affected villages where no one had yet arrived to help them. It is precisely one of them where several Andalusian firefighters from this NGO have been mobilized, which took them almost 8 hours by road to reach: “No one had arrived yet,” comments the coordinator. Anthony Nogales.
