UK sees signs that omicron variant is “more transmittable”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told his government cabinet on Tuesday that the first signs point to the omicron variant of the coronavirus being “more transmissibleThan the delta.

A spokesman for Downing Street, his official office, stressed at the same time that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the dangerousness of the variant, in particular about the severity of the disease it causes and its ability to evade the defenses of the immune system.

Johnson stressed, in statements to the media, that booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are the main line of defense to avoid a new wave of the pandemic.

The Executive announced last week that it will have offered a third dose to all adults in the United Kingdom at the end of January, although in recent days there have been criticisms about the speed with which that plan is being deployed.

Our booster dose program is the fastest in Europe. We have given more doses than any other comparable country. That doesn’t mean we can’t do it any faster, but we are ahead of our own schedule.”, Defended the prime minister.

The UK has already injected more than 20 million booster doses, including three-quarters of those over 65.

Epidemiologist Tim Spector told the BBC that omicron infections seem to double every day in the United Kingdom and considered that the new restrictions on international travel make “very little sense” to try to stop their expansion.
