Earthquake in Morocco: death toll now exceeds 2,000

According to the latest balance sheet from the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior, more than 2,010 people have died and more than 2,000 have been injured after the earthquake of magnitude 6.8 that shook Morocco on Friday night.

The workers of the rescue teams and the Moroccan Armed Forces continue this Sunday the search for survivors among the rubble of the buildings collapsed by the deadliest earthquake in six decades that the country has suffered.

Emergency service workers face the challenge of reaching the most affected areas in the Atlas Mountains, a mountain range where there are locations that are difficult to access and where many houses collapsed due to the earthquake.

According to the WHO, there are more than 300,000 people affected. ““The next 24 to 48 hours are going to be critical in order to save lives,” said Caroline Holt, global director of operations at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

International aid has begun to mobilize to collaborate in the search for survivors and in the work of clearing debris in the areas affected by the earthquake that devastated the region of Marrakech, southern Morocco, on Friday.

Rescue teams have begun to deploy, after Morocco has accepted help from four countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
