the swedish company Spotify asked this Wednesday to the American Manzana to put an end to its “anti-competitive practices”, after the European Commission forced it today to comply with the new antitrust rule of the European Unionwhich among other things, allows users to subscribe to services without the intermediation of technology giants.
“For a long time, Manzana has used its monopoly on the app market to unfairly raise prices, hurt competitors and restrict the choice of European consumers.” Olivia Regnier, Spotify’s Europe head of Government Affairs, said in a statement.
But now, the Cupertino company “will have to end its blatant anti-competitive practices in the EU, stop forcing developers to pay the unfair and discriminatory fee on the App Store, and allow developers to communicate with customers directly about new offers and promotions”Regnier continued.
In addition to Apple, Brussels today forced Alphabet, Amazon, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft to comply with the digital market law.
The Commission gives them six months to comply with the regulations and if they do not, it will be able to take action after a long process that can end in fines of up to 20% of their worldwide turnover and, ultimately, force a restructuring of the company.
