A great torrential Greece since two days ago. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek Prime Ministerassured yesterday Wednesday that the country faces a completely extreme phenomenon and has called for extreme precautions, especially in the center of the country and at least until next Thursday.

The “Daniel storm” that devastates Greece today, Wednesday, for the second day in a row, could be up to 10 times stronger than the DANA that we have just gone through in Spain. So much so that forecasts indicate that in Greece you can exceed 1,000 liters of water per square meter. In Greece it is already considered the most extreme weather event ever recorded, with levels of rainfall never seen before.

After the heat wave that contributed until a few days ago to the worst summer in terms of forest fires since 2007, the center of the country is now facing the effect of torrential rains, which yesterday left the town of Zagorá, in the Magnesia region, a record of 75.4 liters per square meter in 24 hoursalmost double the previous maximum, registered in 2009.

Firefighters have had to rescue, even with rafts, dozens of people trapped in Volos, a city of 150,000 inhabitants and capital of the Magnesia region, which this Wednesday is completely flooded. Most of the city is without electricity or water supply, while damage to the road network throughout the region is extensive.

The storm leaves two people dead

This storm has already caused the mdeath of two people, while another remains missing. The authorities recovered this Wednesday the lifeless body of a woman who was in a flooded stream in the region. On the other hand, a rancher lost his life yesterday when he was crushed by a wall that collapsed due to a landslide. And another 42-year-old man has been missing since yesterday, when the car he was traveling in was swept away by a stream in the town of Ayios Georgios.

Meteorologists talk about most extreme phenomenon that the country has experienced since there are records regarding the amount of rain that has fallen. Currently, the storm is hitting the Trikala, Karditsa, and Phthiotis regions in central Greece, where the authorities have decided to preventively evacuate several towns. The damage to the road network, to homes and premises is extensive both in these areas, as well as in the Sporades islands, on the island of Euboea, and along the entire coast of Thessaly (centre).

This storm comes after a fateful summer that Greece experienced, with several waves of torrid heat and dozens of fires that burned more than 150,000 hectares, about 1.2% of Hellenic territory, and left 25 dead. Last Monday, firefighters were able to contain a huge fire in the Evros region, in the northeast of the country, after 17 days fighting the flames. According to the National Observatory of Athens, the heavy rains will persist this Tuesday and continue until Thursday in the center and south of the country.
