The ex-president donald trump (2017-2021) asked this Thursday the Georgia court that will judge his case for the alleged attempt to reverse the results of the 2020 elections in that state to separate his case from that of the other 18 defendants, in a new attempt to delay the process.
The former president’s lawyers presented a document in the district court of Fulton (Georgia) in which they request that Trump’s case be separated from that of other defendants who requested a speedy trial.
All this after Tuesday the prosecutor in charge of the case, Fani Willis, asked that they all be tried at the same time.
The court has not yet decided whether or not to approve Willis’s proposal, which would mean that the trial will begin on October 23, since Judge Scott McAfee has already decided that this is the start date of the trial against one of the defendants, the attorney Kenneth Chesebro.
In the opinion of Trump’s lawyers, this date does not give the former president enough time to prepare his defense.
“Requiring less than two months of preparation time to defend a 98-page indictment, with 19 defendants, with 41 miscellaneous counts, including one of RICO conspiracy … would violate President Trump’s state and federal constitutional rights to a fair trial and due process of law”points out the document released by The Hill newspaper.
Trump pleaded not guilty this Thursday to the 13 charges against him in Georgia for trying to manipulate the results of the 2020 elections in that state, in which he lost by a narrow margin to the Democrat and current president Joe Biden.
The former president also resigned “freely and voluntarily” to his right to be present at a formal court arraignment, set for September 6.
Trump, who is running for the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential elections, has already pleaded not guilty in the other three criminal proceedings in which he is charged in Washington, Florida and New York.
According to what Judge McAfee told the local Atlanta News First on Thursday, the judicial process in Georgia will be broadcast live through the YouTube platform.
The ex-president already went to Georgia a week ago to be registered and take his mugshot. He was in the Fulton County Jail for just 20 minutes and was released on $200,000 bail.
Trump is the first former president in the history of the United States who has been charged and has already accumulated four criminal cases.
In addition to Georgia, he faces legal proceedings in New York for irregular payments he made during the 2016 campaign to silence porn actress Stormy Daniels for a affaire they had in the past.
Likewise, he is facing Justice in Florida for having taken classified papers to his mansion in Mar-a-Lago when he left the White House in January 2021 and, finally, he must respond in Washington to the assault on the Capitol in 2021, in the that his supporters tried to disrupt the legislative process to certify Biden’s victory in 2020.
