The departure of Julio Borges creates controversy in anti-Chavismo.
The first full week of December begins with problems for the Venezuelan opposition, which again faces an internal breakdown that threatens recent attempts to re-unite to rebuild a common front against the Nicolás Maduro regime.
On Sunday Julio Borges, one of the opposition figures who represented the interim government of Juan Guaidó as commissioner for Foreign Relations – recognized by several countries, including the United States, as president in charge, but without internal control -, said that the The young politician has lost strength and the entire opposition must restructure.
“We have to rebuild and accumulate forces to regain legitimacy inside and outside Venezuela,” said the coordinator of the opposition party Primero Justicia (PJ), of which the two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles is a member, at a press conference in virtual way.
Borges pointed out that currently the anti-Chavista bloc has lost legitimacy and international support because there have been “contradictions, too many errors, scandals and that has caused the world to put the Venezuelan case on hold, thinking that at this moment there is not the force that is available. has achieved before ”.
The opponent pointed out that the figure of the “interim government”, through which Juan Guaidó is recognized by the international community and a sector of the Venezuelan opposition as interim president, must “completely disappear” because his objective has been “deformed.”
In previous weeks, other leaders such as María Corina Machado – head of the hardest line against the regime – have called for changes in the opposition’s structure to generate greater results. She wants, for example, a popular election to appoint the leaders of the opposition.
Meanwhile, for Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas in exile in Spain, the priority remains to get out of Maduro and his tyrannical plot. “The responsibility belongs to everyone and to fully comply with it, three elements are required that should distinguish it from the leadership: 1. A lot of frankness. 2. A lot of coherence and 3. A single strategic line ”, he said on his Twitter account, without referring directly to what Borges said.
Guaidó has not yet personally responded to the criticism, but the so-called interim government indicated that after Borges’ resignation, his tasks will be temporarily assumed by the Deputy Office of the Presidential Commission for Foreign Relations (vice commissioners), which will report directly to Guaidó.
“We reiterate our commitment to the country to end the suffering of Venezuelans, to fight for the recovery of democracy and for the protection of Venezuelans, not only of those who remain in Venezuela, but of the more than 6 million who saw themselves forced to migrate looking for a future for their families, “he said in a publication.
This dispute occurs days after the United States invited Guaidó to its Democracy Summit (December 9 and 10) and after the regional elections, in which Chavismo retained most of the governorships and the election was annulled in Barinas – a traditional bastion of the ruling party – when the opposition candidate was first in the count: Freddy Superlano. Now these elections will be held again, but both Superlano and other opposing options have been disabled for the repetition.
The new episode creates more uncertainty in the face of requests from outside to the opposition to once again have a common and solid front, since past disputes and differences have caused problems when looking for ways out of the serious political crisis and social of the country. (I)
