He mercosur will present its counterproposal to the European Union (EU) in negotiations to close a trade agreement, strong Brazilian parliamentarians reported on Tuesday.
The proposal agreed by the South American bloc will be presented until September 17, said the deputy Pedro Lupionleader of the front of representatives of the agricultural sector in a press conference, after holding a working lunch with the chancellor, Mauro Vieira.
lupion explained that the delay in the presentation of the proposal of the South American bloc was due to the change of government in Paraguay, where Santiago Peña assumed the Presidency on August 15.
Mercosur’s counterproposal is a response to the environmental annex attached by the EU to the general agreement reached by both blocs in 2019 after two decades of negotiations.
According to the Brazilian deputy, the Mercosur counterproposal will include goals “that are possible to be fulfilled”, in contrast to the new environmental requirements of the EU, which “they simply make food production unfeasible in Brazil”.
The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has been especially critical of this new European environmental protocol, which he has described as unacceptable and a threat to agriculture in South American countries.
Lula has expressed his support for signing the agreement during this semester, when Brazil exercises the rotating presidency of the bloc, but has warned that it will not accept what he has defined as a “green protectionism” that, under the pretext of protecting the environment, impose trade barriers and measures “discriminatory”.
