The Investigative Committee of Russia has finished its investigation after the plane crash in the Tver region in which the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeni Prigozhin, was traveling, and has confirmed his deaththrough a DNA test.
“In the framework of the investigation of the plane crash in the Tver region, molecular genetic examinations have been completed. Based on their results, established the identities of the ten deceasedwhich correspond to the list on the flight sheet,” he said in a statement collected by the TASS news agency.
Investigations have shed no light on the causes of the accident. In Prigozhin’s Embraer Legacy 600, which crashed for reasons still unknown some 300 kilometers northwest of Moscow while flying from the Russian capital to Saint Petersburg, was also the main commander and co-founder of the mercenary company, Dmitry Utkin.
Former Russian military intelligence (GRU) officer, Utkin fought in Chechnya, Syria and Ukraine, and was awarded the title of Hero of Russia and precisely with his code name, Wagner, the mercenary company was baptized.
Among the ten occupants of the plane Valery Chekalov was also there.responsible for Prigozhin’s personal security and part of his businesses, recently sanctioned by the United States.
At the moment, the investigations have not shed light on the causes of the accident, among which an explosion on board, a technical failure or even a piloting error are being considered. For its part, the Kremlin has categorically rejected opposition accusations and statements by Western politicians that Putin could be behind of the Prigozhin plane crash.
