The Wagner group is a private group of mercenaries founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin. This military company has been fighting together to the Russian regular army in Ukrainebut before this they had already participated in conflicts on a global level in which Russia had strategic interests.
Among them is the war in Donbas, the Internal Conflict in Sudan, the second Central African civil war and the Syrian civil war, among others. “They were investigated for war crimes for having cut off the arms, beheaded and burned a Syrian dissident,” Antonio Maestre said in an intervention on Al Rojo Vivo. In fact, Wagner’s mercenaries came to admit that they had killed children and minors in Ukraine.
However, their relationship with Putin was tarnished by considering that the Russian government was trying to take action on what they considered an attempt to control them. A situation that created great tension and ended up causing them to make an attempt to mutiny led by Prigozhin.
An attempt at rebellion that Putin himself dismissed as “stab in the back” and treason against Russia and which, however, was settled without charges against Prigozhin, who would go into exile in Belarus after an agreement reached with the mediation of the president of that country, Aleksandr Lukashenko.
Now, Wagner’s leader has been presumed dead after crash a plane in which he was traveling near Moscow.
At the moment Wagner’s troops continue active in Africa and the Middle Eastalthough there is now some uncertainty about its future after losing its leader.
