The Minister of Economy and Argentine presidential candidate, Sergio Massaaffirmed this Tuesday in Washington that the dollarization of Argentina proposed by his ultra-liberal opponent Javier Milei generates concern in USA.
In a press conference, he said that Washington is not surprised “the appearance of these anti-political phenomena” in the region because there have already been others, but “They do worry about someone promising to build the economy using their currency.”
“It sounds strange to them that someone agrees to give Argentines the currency that does not belong to the Argentines, but to the United States”he claimed.
Therefore, the minister and Peronist candidate suggested that Milei must have had “some correlate of talk with the US Federal Reserve or Congress” to make a proposal like that.
“I suppose that some permission or some talk must have had those who today offer dollarization to Argentines to be able to use the dollars in Argentina,” Massa said at a press conference.
Massa made these statements after signing in Washington with the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) additional financing for Argentina for some US$1.3 billion in programs for food security and for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The minister and candidate arrived in the US capital on Tuesday for various meetings, including a meeting on Wednesday with the managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva.
This meeting will take place the same day that the agency’s board of directors plans to approve the latest revision of the debt refinancing agreement, which will mean disbursements for Argentina in two tranches of US$10,000 million, some US$7,500 million this month and the rest in November.
The disbursement, stipulated to refinance the country’s debt with the agency for some US$ 45,000 million -contracted during the Government of Mauricio Macri (2015-2019)-, was postponed by the IMF itself pending evaluation of the results of the elections primaries of Argentina.
In the elections, held on August 13, the surprise victory of the ultra-liberal Javier Milei, with a 30.04% of support, kicked the political board and the IMF itself contacted him and the opposition candidate, the center-right Patricia Bullrich, the third most voted leader, behind Massa, to exchange economic positions in the event of an eventual government.
