Peru congratulates Bernardo Arévalo and hopes to strengthen its ties with Guatemala

Peru congratulated this Monday the president-elect of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, winner of the elections this Sunday in the Central American country, and expressed its desire to continue strengthening the ties of friendship between the two countries.

“Peru congratulates the President-elect of the Republic of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, for his victory in the general elections”, indicated the Peruvian Foreign Ministry in a message published on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

He added that the Andean country “reaffirms the will to continue working for the strengthening of mutual friendship and cooperation ties, in favor of our populations”.

Arévalo de León, a 64-year-old academic from the progressive Movimiento Semilla group, prevailed with a wide advantage over former first lady Sandra Torres Casanova in the second round of the elections held on Sunday in Guatemala.

With 100% of the ballot boxes counted, Arévalo de León, who was the big surprise in the first round of the elections, won the second round with 58% of the votes, compared to the 37% achieved by Torres Casanova, to govern in the period 2024-2028.

Considered a progressive party and of the moderate left, the Movimiento Semilla group was born from the anti-corruption demonstrations registered in 2015 in Guatemala and that led to the fall of the Government of Otto Pérez Molina (2012-2015) due to a scandalous and millionaire case of bribes.

Arévalo De León, who is currently a deputy, came to the runoff driven by a solid urban vote, with the promise of fighting corruption in the Central American country and the intention of emulating the presidency of his father, Juan José Arévalo Bermejo, who ruled the country between 1945-1951.
