The Government of the British Virgin Islands reported this Saturday that it “seriously” considers accepting an offer from guyana to use their land for the industry agriculture.
“Certainly it is something that we must discuss,” said the deputy minister of Agriculture of the Caribbean territory, Karl Dawson, after meeting recently with officials of guyana and offer them that opportunity.
Dawson defended considering the offer, since the Government of Barbados also has 50 acres (0.20 square kilometers) in guyana for the same agricultural purpose.
“Therefore, we do not rule out the possibility of following in his footsteps to feed ourselves,” the official added.
Dawson further said that if the British Virgin Islands produce food in guyanaexport costs would be more commercially viable.
The senior official acknowledged that, at the moment, it is more expensive to import and export products to and from Guyana, but with the discovery of Petroleum and the opening of the country’s economy, it is anticipated that export costs will decrease in the coming years.
