An hour after closing, one of the entrances was reopened, but only for the transit of people.
The United Nations headquarters in New York was cordoned off this Thursday at the end of the morning due to the presence of an armed man at the gate, officials of the organization said.
“The UN headquarters is closed, there is police activity”, before the UN headquarters, the spokesman of the organization Stéphane Dujarric confirmed to AFP.
According to an official who requested anonymity, “a man with a rifle threatens to kill himself” in front of one of the entrances to the building.
The avenue that flanks the UN headquarters was closed to traffic. In the photos observed by AFP, the man who caused the organization to close was in front of a gate and the police were taking cover behind a van.
Later, Dujarric said that the closure to road and human traffic was decided at 10:45 as a preventive measure, without specifying what type of weapon the individual was carrying, who on the other hand was already in the hands of the UN police, who they were questioning him.
“Our perception so far is that there are no political motives” that explain the presence of this armed man, Dujarric clarified.
An hour after closing, one of the entrances was reopened, but only for the transit of people.
Precisely today the UN resumed its program of “tourist visits” in groups of ten people, with the obligation to show proof of vaccination for those over 12 years of age.
The closure of the headquarters has not generated any disturbance inside the building, where the Security Council was continuing a meeting devoted to Iraq. (I)
